Zambia & Victoria Falls

Honeymoon in Zambia

Several years ago my husband and I decided to take a trip to South Africa to see his parents and to take our honeymoon in Zambia by Victoria Falls. We got married in Los Angeles California with Gary’s best friend from SA and his wife in a small private venue. We then celebrated with my family at Thanksgiving and the rest of my friends in small groups before heading off to Zambia.

We stayed at The David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa by aha Hotel Group. A gorgeous place right on the river with beautiful grounds, lovely room and excellent staff. It was one of those places I’ve been to that I’ve thought to myself “I can’t afford to be here”. That said it wasn’t pretentious at all, it was very comfortable and we truly enjoyed the hotel, the dining area and the spa for a couple of treatments.

Zambia Tourist Attractions

Since it was our honeymoon, we made sure to do more touristy things than we normally would. So we did some things, a couple which were definitely out of my comfort zone but I am many times open to doing something…once!  One very scary thing that we did was to sit at the edge of the Victoria Falls, yes, seriously!  It’s called Devil’s Falls and you swim through the roaring water holding a rope until you get to a little pool at the edge of the falls.  The guide was trying to get me to sit up on the edge, it was not happening (see the photo below). It was seriously scary and I honestly cannot believe they let you do this!  There was even one girl on our trip who couldn’t swim yet they led her out there through strong waters…even crazier!  Well, check that off the ol’ bucket list because I am NOT doing that again! LOL  Where the tour starts from is a gorgeous  5 star hotel called the Royal Livingston Vic Falls Hotel…think old Hollywood Glamour it was elegance from the Victorian age of the 20s. Zebras were roaming around the grounds as we walked through to the waiting area, a truly beautiful place.  That said, it felt very stiff in a lot of ways so I’m happy we stayed at our hotel, just a few minutes away….much more comfortable & casual!

Victoria Falls Sunset & Dinner on the Royal Livingstone Express

This was a luxury steam train that took us on a scenic railroad to the bridge to see the Vic Falls, just before the border of Zimbabwe. There was a speaker or host on board that told us stories and history of the train and the area. We had a wonderful time and the red carpet welcome was fantastic. The dinner was very nice, my favorite part was probably when the staff all walked through singing!

Flights Over Victoria Falls

Gary went on a micro light, I went on a “fixed wing 2 seater aircraft”….breath taking, no really, took my breath away. He was going to go around a second time and I said no thank you! For me that was a ‘one and done” experience. My husband on the other hand, was saying more more and he and his pilot were doing all sorts of acrobatics and loving it.

Packing List for Zambia Honeymoon

Because it was our honeymoon, I dressed up more than I normally would …just because it was fun. I don’t normally wear so much black but a) I love black b) I feel sexy and confident in it and c) it was my honeymoon so I wanted to dress up a bit. I “lightened it” by doing sleeveless, spaghetti strap and by pairing it with tan accessories and tassels to make it more playful. I even put my blue tassels/pom pom keychain on my purse to add some fun & color to any outfit.
