WomanTravelerTravel Tips for Women 2021

Most of these relate to Airline Travel and can be applied for solo travel, travel with your partner or even with your kids! Here are my top travel tips for women, hope they help you have a better travel experience!

Travel Tip #1: Always check and re-check the weather of the place(s) you are going to. Checking them months ahead or the “averages” gives you a good guide but weather changes all of the time so just double check before you go.

Travel Tip #2: Pack early! I pack 4-7 days before a trip. Why? Because I want to make sure that every item I want to take with me is clean, washed and packed. Too many times I’ve worn something that now I have to rush to wash & dry before a trip and who needs that additional stress?!  Also I don’t want to be running to the pharmacy because the night before the trip I’ve discovered I’m out of medicine or something I really need from the trip…again keep it stress free by packing early!

Travel Tip #3: If you travel often, make sure you have a Toiletries Kit ready to go. It’s easy to have a bag that has all of your favorite travel basics in a bag ready to go so that you can grab it and go! See Packing Tips for Toiletries Here.

Travel Tip #4: Make sure that your luggage, let’s say you are doing carry-on only and you have a roller case and a soft sided weekender type duffel bag. Make sure that if you are told that you MUST check your larger piece of luggage that it is a) a hard-sided case, b) has no valuables in it and c) has a TSA lock on it. No matter how much you try to prepare ahead of time, things happen where overhead bins get full or there is a change in the type of plane so your case no longer will fit. Expect the unexpected and handle it like a true travel professional…be prepared!

Travel Tip #5: Always make sure to check that all of your luggage will fit within the specific airlines you are traveling with. If you are traveling one international flight and one domestic, make sure to check BOTH sites.

Travel Tip #6: Always travel with the following in your soft sided carry-on bag that can fit under the seat: Laptop, Camera, Phone, Chargers, any jewelry, medicines, travel documents (itineraries, hotel information, etc). For Packing Tips, check the Travel Blog Page.

Travel Tip #7: In your hand luggage, have your 3-11 in it’s own clear plastic bag per the security regulations and easy to grab and put in the tray when going through security. Read about the 3-1-1 Packing Tips Here.

Travel Tip #8: In your hand luggage, for long flights: make sure you have a slim bag that has everything you will want while at your seat that will fit behind the seat in the pocket in front of you. This should be any items that you want to have for the duration of the flight. In my Quick Grab Bag I have the following:  my phone, phone charger, headphones, lip balm, ear plugs, eye mask, tissues, disinfectant wipes, a pen (or 2…having one to loan always goes a long way with your neighbors), medicine or pain relief/sleeping aid if needed, blow up travel pillow. This bag is also super important when you are sitting in the front row where nothing is allowed on the floor during take off or landing which I do often as I have long legs!

Travel Tip #9: Choose the seat that’s right for you. I have long legs so I do not fit in an economy seat on my planes without my knees being wedged on the seat in front. Also I’m plus size so I’ve found that certain domestic airlines especially, are just not made for me. One key thing to note that when you’re traveling is many of the exit row seats (which I am a big fan of) if they do not recline, that means they have FIXED seats. This can mean a smaller seat as the sides/arm rests are thick solid pieces vs. an open bottom with just an arm rest. So do your research and make sure you pay attention to things like that when selecting a seat. The BEST seat selection (other than in Business Class) is at the front of a row by the window. The front of the row by an aisle I’ve noticed I get hit or stepped on…so I’ve switched it to the window. Now the “window” seat, at the front of the aisle, tends to not actually have a window but a solid wall since the exit is just a few feet in front so again, this is something to consider. If you get air sick or need to be able to see out the window, this is not a good seat for you!

Travel Tip #10:  Make sure you are enrolled in any and all frequent flier programs. Getting on the plane early can ensure your bag does not get selected to check vs. carry on. Also to be able to get in, get settled lowers the stress….you are there. Grab your book and start enjoying the ride!

Travel Tip #11: Even if you do not have status on an airline, look into other options for getting into lounges.  For example, our South African bank has airline lounges in OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg.  Having a safe and clean place without having to worry about watching my luggage every second is priceless!  If you have a long layover, you can even pay sometimes say $25 to use a lounge. That price is COMPLETELY worth it when you look at how expensive food is in the airport. I’ve paid that much for a sandwich and an iced tea so do your research.  If you travel often, you should be part of a program. Priority Pass is a great program. They have lounges all over the world even in the most exotic locations.  Here is a link to save you 10% on a membership, you can find out more information here:  Priority Pass-Check Latest Site for Deals
